Daily Happiness

1. Got my hair cut this morning. It doesn't seem like a month since the last time, but that's how I schedule it, so I guess it is! Due to the AWS outages, they were unable to take payment through their system and their backup of Venmo was also down, but I do have a card on file with them, so they were able to offer the option of just charging that card as soon as things were up and working again, which they seem to have been this afternoon, as I did receive an email receipt from them.

2. I'm glad I always download audiobooks to my phone to listen to rather than streaming from the app, as apparently Hoopla was also affected. I happened to finish the book I was listening to right as I arrived at work, and opened the app to return the book, and it the app wasn't working at all (though it had still been playing while I was driving).

3. Tomorrow and Wednesday are likely to be long days at work, but I was able to finish up early today, which was nice. I think I got home around 4:30ish.

4. I love how Tuxie's legs look like a fish tail here.

I mostly post about:

every day interactions, projects i’m working on, movies, mostly just my every day life! i’m probably going to start posting some photography too.

My hobbies are:

photography, cinema, writing, art in general, cooking, reading, watching obscure films & shorts, learning italian, thrifting, collecting vhs tapes

My fandoms are:

not really in fandoms much, but some of my media interests include: horror (halloween series, five nights at freddy’s, no i’m not a human, giallo films, killer7, deadly premonition, etc), speculative fiction (kathe koja especially), psychological thrillers, internet ephemera, weird niches in general. i’m really into things like mannequins, dolls, masks, and animatronics as well.

I'm looking to meet people who:

are artsy & weird! people who always have a project going (doesn’t have to art related - stem can be included here too), activists,

My posting schedule tends to be: just returned to dw (lifelong online journal-er though) sand i am fairly busy so it’ll most likely be weekly

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:

not really anything besides the obvious! just be respectful & tag warnings appropriately :)

Before adding me, you should know: i had a deadjournal since i was 11, i think that says everything about me hahaha

AWS outage

DW is seeing some issues due to today's Amazon outage. For right now it looks like the site is loading, but it may be slow. Some of our processes like notifications and journal search don't appear to be running and can't be started due to rate limiting or capacity issues. DW could go down later if Amazon isn't able to improve things soon, but our services should return to normal when Amazon has cleared up the outage.

Edit: all services are running as of 16:12 CDT, but there is definitely still a backlog of notifications to get through.

Edit 2: and at 18:20 CDT everything's been running normally for about the last hour.

Daily Happiness

1. I have been meaning to get out in the sheds and move some of my mom's stuff from the shed with our stuff to the one with my step-sister's stuff, since she cleaned so much out of it last month. I finally got around to that today. Didn't move all of my mom's (and her husband's) stuff in there, but I moved most of it, and I think I can get the last bit in as well. I'm just saving it for another day. Then I can work on organizing the stuff in our shed, which has now become a complete jumble. :( I've ordered some more wire rack shelves from Amazon, so hopefully that will help.

2. A new supermarket opened not far from us on Friday. It's basically a reopening as the store was there for years then closed down a few years ago and was completely razed and they built apartments, but it's now reopened on the ground floor of the apartment complex. It's much larger than it was, and very nice and fancy. They sent out a postcard the other day with some coupons, free items every week, with the first one being a free pack of bacon. So we walked down there this morning to check it out, got our free bacon and a few other things, then stopped at the Italian deli across the street and got sandwiches to take home for lunch. It was a nice outing, though the walk home was already getting way too sunny.

3. Such a sleepy guy.

Weekly Reading

I've decided that from now on I'm just going to post about books I've finished, rather than splitting my thoughts up between ones I've just started and ones I've finished.

Recently Finished
The Sinister Mystery of the Mesmerizing Girl
I'm bummed that this series was only three volumes, as I would continue to read more of their adventures, but this was a good ending.

The Amnesia Project
I liked the premise but the writing was just so mediocre.

The Manor of Dreams
This ended up being really good. Was not expecting f/f romance both in the present day storyline and the past, but it was a nice surprise.

A Witch Too Late
This was another mystery that was too cozy for me. It think I got it on a free promo. Even from the summary, I can't imagine I would have paid money for it. The MC is a recently divorced woman about to turn fifty. One day she gets a strange package in the mail and suddenly finds herself with magical power. It turns out she's a witch, but witches normally manifest their powers at puberty. There is also a murder mystery, but the murder mystery does not even get started until halfway through the book! Before that it's just like, what if Hogwarts letter but middle aged? And I can see the appeal for some people, but it was definitely too far on the cozy side for me and not enough murder mystery focused. Definitely will not continue the series.

My Home Hero vol. 1-3
I got this ages and ages ago on a free promo from Amazon Japan and I'm trying to go through and read all these freebies before buying more manga. The premise sounded interesting (well, interesting enough for me to download for free, though I'm not sure I would have paid money for it on the premise alone): this got long )

Media Roundup, Accidental Advent All-in-One

Bit of everything...

The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter 1 (Kazuki Irodori/Yatsuki Wakatsu/Kikka Ohashi) - manga, read before and why I ended up getting the novels. I still have the last novel to finish (or, probably, a re-read of the whole series; it's only three books) and then maybe I'll get back to picking up the manga? BL isekai-gone-wrong series, does start off rather dubious.

Land of the Blindfolded 1-9 (Sakura Tsukuba) - from the box of manga I dragged home to read last November and then, uh, just put in the stacks. This is some vintage shoujo where the leads have supernatural powers. (In this case, being able to see the future/past at times.) A nice romance, and all the side bits with the puppy and turtle are cute. I'm debating keeping this one; I suppose I have a month to decide.

Disgaea 1-3 DVDs - the Disgaea anime is okay. It's certainly an adaptation, and it's enjoyable on its own but it also has moments perpendicular to the game but... (It kinda makes me want to replay the game, really?) I think this was out, originally, because my mother had wanted to watch it back before she decided she did not actually like the Prinny plush she'd adored for more than a decade. Anyway, she also did not like the anime and I suspect that was the beginning of the end for the plush, which I rescued.)

The Perilous Void (Jason Lutes/Keny Widjaja) - this is a TTRPG book to use for generating basically everything you need for Space Adventures. It's a joy to even skim through. I don't really have a dedicated tabletop shelf right now (or shelves, at this point) and need to rectify that somehow.

Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy - I think this was out because the boycritter isn't actually familiar with much Gundam/Universal Century.

Try Knights - I bounced off this the first time but enjoyed it on try no. 2 (lol). This is a sports anime about rugby, which I have no knowledge of and the series expects that of its audience and does its best to teach along the way. (I cannot say I understand much more, but-) Lots of pretty boys, lots of ship bait.

A pile of keepers this time (and debating for a bit on Land of the Blindfolded), surprisingly.

Daily Happiness

1. It got sunny and warm later in the day, but this morning when I took my usual neighborhood walk and then later walked to the farmers market was actually very pleasant. I didn't get hot and sweaty at all!

2. We had a nice lunch at Disneyland, though I definitely felt the sun then! Sunblock and a hat did what they could, but the UV... D:

3. Seeing all the photos of the No Kings protests today is so heartening. They're saying an estimated seven million people, which is more than the ones earlier this year!

4. Jasper loves hanging out on this sofa when we watch TV.

1. My library no longer charges overdue fees, but they do send daily reminder emails when something is overdue, and this one had two people waiting, so I felt bad about it as well, but I managed to finish it up last night and dropped it off this morning, only two days late!

2. Tonight we tried out another of the neighborhood pizza places we've been wanting to try. This one has mostly standard pizzas but their specialty seems to be the grandma style, a square pizza with really crispy, cheesy edges. We tried slices of the original grandma (just cheese and sauce), spicy pepperoni (also grandma style), and a BBQ chicken pizza, which was round with a regular crust. All three were delicious.

3. I tried both the peanut butter chocolate cookie and pumpkin cake that we brought home from Disneyland the other day and they're both really good. The cookie has a huge lump of peanut butter filling in the center and the gummy worms are fruity, which gives it sort of a pb&j vibe.

4. Look at these sweetie girls sharing a sunny window.

Wandering Thoughts

Still thinking about Astray stuff, and how timeline constraints but an apparent demand for more canon are probably what sent the series down repeated and increasing stupid paths. (And how it has spent a decade and a half constantly kicking one of the best characters and making sure she stays down.) Still didn't need an entire series written with the author's hand down his pants.

(It does, however, make me feel a bit better about my own writing.)

((But Kalloway, you like a lot of incredibly racy stuff- Sure do! And I support every author's right to write with their hand down their pants but it can still also be not what I want/I can still hate it in a long-running series that's been mostly tame otherwise.))

Weekend is going to be all over the place, rather literally. I'm not quite sure what I'll manage other than clawing my way through, but that's okay. (I'm picking up an overtime dayshift in the middle, so some of it is 100% on me. Actually everything is about 80% on me. And that's also fine.)

I mostly post about: personal stuff and fandom equally, also my creative projects (I'm a huge writer and artist!) I also talk about my tech projects and such. Health struggles & disability/mental health activism and destigmatization. Cooking. Life goings-on. My OCs. I'm trying to get back into using dreamwidth more, so I'd love to make some new friends!

My hobbies are: writing, digital art, watching tv, making video games, playing video games, crafting, thrifting, technology (mostly self-hosting and personal websites right now), cooking...

My fandoms are: I'm a huge science fiction fan, so right now it's Babylon 5, The Orville, Star Trek (mostly lower decks and star trek online), etc. Also super into Yellowjackets and Psych at the moment.

I'm looking to meet people who: don't mind my journal being a little all over the place, are kind and accepting, love science fiction, art, writing, tech, or making OCs, or creativity in general. People who are spiritual but queer-affirming, pro-choice and open-minded. People who like to talk and don't mind if I'm awkward. People who share my fandoms, especially my special interest which is currently The Orville. Other neurodiverse folks. Or anyone who is cool with the things I mention here!

My posting schedule tends to be: sporadic

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, fatphobia. Please don't be a bigot. Also, I don't wish to add anyone who identifies as an "anti" or believes certain types of fiction should inherently be censored, and will unadd for this kind of behavior.

Daily Happiness

1. Got the car stuff taken care of. Apparently there have been two recalls (neither of them urgent) and the most recent one requires a part replaced and they don't yet have the replacement parts, so they'll contact us when they get those in, but they did take care of the first, and did a full tune up and all that, and also washed the car (it wasn't in terrible shape, but always nice to get it washed). They did not have a Kia dealership in town when we bought this car, but they do now, which is very nice. It's technically within walking distance, but it would be a long walk, so I picked Carla up this morning and dropped her off this afternoon.

2. It was nice to have the day off. Didn't do anything special, just relax. I had considered putting together the Billy bookcase we bought a couple weeks ago, but decided against it. I know it won't actually take that long (though it has doors, so it will be longer than just the bookcase on its own), but it feels like such a large project. It was so nice with the furniture for the garage, I could just leave it half done and do a bit each day and it wasn't in the way, but this is for Carla's bedroom, so it needs to be done all at once (though I suppose the doors can be done on another day). Maybe this weekend. We really need more shelf space, so that is a good reason to get it done lol.

3. Molly is such a sweetie.

Finished watching Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka...

...and it was something alright. This Anime, like the Manga it was based upon manages to make you feel so uncomfortable in a variety of ways from the overly graphic violent tones paired with unapologetic streams of blood splashing everywhere coupled with over saturated scenes of fanservice ranking from Sailor Moon-type of revealing to the unconditional tropes of a distasteful Hentai you would watch to point out how cringy and ridiculous it is. The moral undertones in this series makes to wonder why it was even planned to begin with, and while some characters have potential to grow into a sympathetic trope themselves, it gets thrown out the window in the very next scene with aforementioned themes.

However there's one character in particular that makes this Anime even worse than you could ever tolerate watching, that character being Mugen Kurumi AKA The "War Nurse," who is potentially the very worst Anime character I ever had the displeasure in watching. Her very, VERY questionable portrayal as a healer AND torturer comes highly polirizing at best.

It makes me uncomfortable that Square-Enix was involved in the publishing of this series as well. You *could* watch it for the sympathetic feelings towards characters like Asuka and some actually good battle scenes, but I doubt you could get past a couple episodes much less the entire thing.

On the other hand, went on downloading Streets of Rage 2 on my phone and had a great time in nostalgiaville, so it did ease the uncomfortable feelings I experienced watching that Anime at least.

nothing in particular

There is something about me that really drives old people to initiate agonizingly oversharing conversations. Like, I'm kinda glad I could be there for the old lady in the grocery store who is still really going thru it with her mother's death just before 2020. And her declining mobility. The last old lady I chatted with at the lake was also having extremely valid big feelings about her declining mobility. And tbf, I do not have enough adults to talk to IRL so like. Maybe it works out for both of us?? Still, hard to guard my natural O_O face when I am feeling very "why are you telling me this, a complete stranger, please," when the conversation maybe should have ended with "after you!"

This woman, in particular reminded me of my grandma, who would just have really strong opinions about things and charge in with them like you had been arguing against them or maybe she could tell you intended to (whether you did or not, or even knew wtf she was talking about lol) - either way, she was already deep in the trenches 😅

My neighbour was another one, with the awful details of his cat's death. I mean. O_O He was obviously suffering, too. And also, I liked that cat a lot. He was very noisy and had much to say about us being in our his backyard.

These pics have probably far less broad appeal than northern animals, but when I was at the grocery store we were getting buzzed by planes and I was like "THERE ARE HORNETS IN MY TOWN!" and very upset I was doing the stupid shopping when I could be lookin at em. LOL. The grocery store is right beside the airport, so the planes all land and take off right over the parking lot. We don't often get fighter jets!

But!! I got outside finally (after hearing the hornets 4x and a globemaster once), and they were just doing a final lap before landing. You can see their little feetsies sticking out:

2 cf-18 hornets )

In unrelated news, one of my peppers started turning red ON THE VINE! I had lost hope completely and was going to bring them all inside anyway, just to see what happens. AHHH a baby 🥹

Off to go buy Pokemon Z-A with L! I did not like Arceus so I'm not going in on this with him, but he is very excited.

Daily Happiness

1. We had a nice dinner at Disneyland tonight. The parks were crowded, but it's finally feeling like fall weather, so that made it more pleasant than hot and crowded for sure.

2. Speaking of weather, it rained for a few more hours last night after I went to bed. It doesn't look like we're supposed to get any more in the near future, but I'm glad we got as much as we did.

3. Yesterday at work I saw this sweet potato spread and meant to buy it before going home, but forgot. But today I remembered, and I had a piece of toast tonight with butter and the spread and it was so good! It's not like a sweet potato jam, it's a creamy spread more like peanut butter. The package says you can also spread it on before toasting to give it a real roasted sweet potato feel, so I'm going to try that next.

4. I'm taking the day off tomorrow. On Monday a check engine light went on in the car, no accompanying beeps or message, so it didn't seem urgent, but it did stay on, so Carla called and made an appointment to take it in to the dealership. She's been wanting to get a tune up anyway, and there's some sort of recall that should be looked into as well. The appointment is for tomorrow, and I just decided that even though we have another car I could use, and it's not me taking the car in, work doesn't have to know that, so I put in a PTO request and told my boss I have to take the car to the shop, so I can't come in. (Now today the check engine light was off, but it does still need to get checked out, so we're keeping the appointment.)

5. Look at that leg!
