engine running hotter than a boiling kettle

Despite getting a late start all weekend and being distracted by a new matching game on my phone (I can lose hours to these stupid games), I got some good cooking done!

Yesterday, I made garlic & mozzarella milk bread (pics), which turned out quite well even though I forgot the salt due to its weird placement in the recipe (in theory I understand why it is where it is, but in practice it makes no sense to do it that way), but I used salted butter, so I don't think I missed it, and the bread rose just fine.

This afternoon, I finally made this strawberry cheesecake since my cream cheese was well past its use-by date and my heavy cream was getting there! It's still chilling, but when I licked the spatula after pouring the filling into the pie plate, all I really tasted was the five-spice powder. Which I like! But it's not what I would expect given the amount of freeze-dried strawberry powder in it. I guess we'll see how it goes when I cut into it tomorrow. (I also have this issue with nutmeg - even when I try to go easy on it in something, it still is frequently the only thing I taste after using it. I don't know why!)

And then I finally got up and made meatballs with oregano and red wine vinegar to have for lunch during the week. This was a method my grandmother used to use, and it is a great way to eat meatballs (or veggies - she also used to make it with zucchini, and I imagine you could do other types of squash or eggplant this way) - you make and cook the meatballs and set them aside. Then you saute onions in some olive oil (or in the beef fat left if you've fried your meatballs - I do mine in the oven, so I just use oil) and lower the heat and let them caramelize a bit, then you put the meatballs back in , sprinkle about 1/8 cup of dried oregano over them, and the pour in 1/3 - 3/4 cup of red wine vinegar. Be careful as billows of deliciously pungent smoke will rise from your frying pan at that point! Then lower the heat and let it all simmer for 10 or 15 minutes. Good both hot and at room temperature! (I haven't made it with zucchini myself, but for that, you slice and fry or bake your zucchini, and then continue on with the onions/oregano/vinegar as described.)

I have taken the garbage out and started the dishwasher, so now I am prepared for the awfulness of Sunday night. Sigh.

Guardian Slo-Mo Rewatch

I don't know where the day went, or the weekend. How is it almost midnight already?!

Anyway: Over at [community profile] sid_guardian we've kicked off another rewatch - a slo-mo one this time, half an episode per week. And since we've already done the "take an epic amount of notes and write epic post" kind of rewatch, this one's going to be a bit more relaxed. *g*

Zhao Yunlan sprawled on a couch, grinning at his phone. The background shows a purply sky with stars. Text reads "Slo-Mo Rewatch. Guardian - half an episode per week @ sid-guardian.dreamwidth.org."

Here's the first post, episode 1, part 1.

"Good morning."

I woke up at 3am to watch the premiere of Kamen Rider Zeztz, and I've been regretting it ever since. Not that the premiere was bad—although it wasn't really good either—but with my current work schedule and the time I have to be up in order to get the train, it's just too punishing. I spent the day zoning in and out of fitful sleep. All the while, somewhat fittingly, the first episode of Zeztz played on loop.

I've watched this episode in bits and pieces throughout most of the day since waking up, making tea, and sitting down with friends in discord. It's playing now as I write this, in fact. I don't have anything to say about the content of the episode, it's a typical episode by Takahashi Yuya, whose stories I don't really enjoy, but what I do want to talk about is the fact that a Kamen Rider show just aired with multiple subtitles for an international audience just an hour after its broadcast in Japan. When I say "international," I don't just mean America either. We got it! Hong Kong got it! Mainland China got it! Brazil got it! Even though I don't have strong feelings about this new show, I can't believe that happened! That it will happen next week! And the week after that! And for a total of roughly fifty weeks all the way to September of next year! I want to sing the praises of Shout Factory, who previously aroused nothing but my ire as whenever they would get the rights to a Toei show, it would mean the rest of us were locked out for good, and I definitely want to praise all the good that Sato Company are doing in Brazil. Before this I had taken Toei's commitment to an "international approach" with a pinch of salt, the missteps of the past few years feeling as if they were taking that salt and rubbing it in the wound, but this... maybe something good is going to come of this; maybe building success here and creating little Kabutack spin-offs for mainland China over the last few years is the beginning of something really good.

Every time I try and talk about things, I realise how tired I am though, so maybe this isn't making much sense. I'm going to bed now, but you who are reading this are assumedly not, so I want to encourage you to go and watch this looped stream of a show that I didn't really care for because maybe you do, and if more people care about these shows, even the ones I don't like, maybe we really will see Kamen Rider become as familiar to audiences here as Marvel comic characters have become. I'd really like that. For now, though, I'm going to sleep.

Good night.

Small Web September Check-In 1: Links!

We’ve reached the first check-in point for Small Web September! How is everyone doing so far? Whether you’re just getting warmed up or are already ticking off goals (or maybe you just found this and want to join – welcome!), come and share your progress in the comments of this check-in.

The theme of this week’s check-in is links! Earlier this year, I came across Coy ([personal profile] osteophage)’s link compilation in praise of links, which led me down a rabbit hole of reading various essays about the importance of hyperlinking and being a good steward of the web. This includes not making your own site into an effective dead end, but sending people on to interesting destinations via links that you’ve included there.

I’ve always been a lover of curating cool webpages and sites, but it struck me that I wasn’t actually doing much of this on my own little website – now, it’s a personal fanworks archive, so you could argue that linking out to random pages is a bit out of step with the purpose of it. However, it broadened my thinking about where I could start adding more links: from archiving rec lists to linking out to gifts that other fans had made for me over the years.

So, the discussion starter for this check-in is: how do you link, and to what? Do you have a link hub or set of interesting finds? Would you like to do more with links?

Green Energy

These clear windows can secretly produce solar power

Cholesteric liquid crystal coatings enable transparent, unidirectional solar concentrators compatible with modern windows.

Scientists have created a transparent solar coating that turns ordinary windows into clean energy generators without affecting clarity. Using cholesteric liquid crystal layers, the coating redirects polarized sunlight to the window edges where solar cells collect it. A small prototype already powered a fan, and full-sized windows could boost efficiency 50-fold while cutting the need for costly photovoltaic cells.

Useful, if it's affordable.

Lazy Sunday~

Not a whole lot today really... Got my shinies in pokemon, finally! (The vulpix were easy, got two of them in the first outbreak before it even got to max likelihood! Numel, on the other hand... didn't even find ONE until the fourth outbreak orz orz orz) Did some washing. Finished repairing that shawl!

Also Minecraft, which has started crashing a bunch which is Very Annoy, ugh. Pretty sure it's due to the mod I updated, so I guess I'll go roll that back. :/ Annoying, though, it's got a bugfix I specifically wanted... Alas! Will probably be fine on a new world, it's just got a config file reformat in there which I'm not surprised fucks shit up. Annoyed. But not surprised.

And now to bed with me, yes!

Weekend reading

I picked up an eclectic haul at a used book sale yesterday and have already finished two of them:

- I Am Morgan le Fay by Nancy Springer, which is more or less equal parts Arthurian retelling, non-Arthurian influences (Celtic mythology; Child Ballad 37/Sir Walter Scott's "Thomas the Rhymer"), and a certain type of 90s/00s(?) Amethyst-Eyed Teenage Girl Protagonist fantasy novel (affectionate) (but also, literally, Morgan has emerald-green-and-amethyst heterochromia, which is how you know she is fey/magic/special) (STILL AFFECTIONATE, I would have eaten this up with a spoon in middle school). Enjoyed this a lot! ... )

- The Magicians: Alice's Story, a graphic novel spin-off of the Lev Grossman trilogy by Lilah Sturges (writer) and Pius Bak (illustrator); this is a re-write of The Magicians (as in, the first book in Grossman's series— this is very much based on the book rather than the TV show, which was occasionally disorienting: why is everyone white??) from Alice's point of view, which actually resolves a lot of my issues with the novel, i.e., the insufferableness of Quentin as a main character and the fridged girlfriend-ness of Alice's storyline.

The rest of my haul was: a copy of Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster which was, per its inscription, a 1946 Christmas gift from the original owner's aunt; two Patrick O'Brian novels, including The Unknown Shore, his pre-/proto-Aubreyad RPF historical fiction of the Wager mutiny, having read David Grann's nonfiction account earlier this year; and a biography of Sir Bernard Spilsbury (The Father of Forensics by Colin Evans), who I mostly know about in the context of his tangential involvement in Operation Mincemeat. So stay tuned!

Island of apples, baskets of pears

Fruit trees have very much been the theme of this weekend. Someone was giving away pears from a box in their front garden on my return walk from the gym yesterday, and another person was giving away apples when I passed on my way back from the pool this morning. Yesterday afternoon Matthias and I scrambled around on a ladder, and even in the tree itself, picking all the bramley apples from the tree in our back garden. Now two shelves, plus the vegetable crisper in our fridge are entirely filled with apples. Last year they lasted us from August to March!

Everywhere in our house, there are little scattered clusters of fruit — a trio of pears and two large tomatoes ripening on the front windowsill, bowls of apples on the kitchen table, a handful of black cherry tomatoes on the kitchen windowsill in between the indoor plants — like votive offerings to household or harvest gods.

In general, the garden is making me very happy.

If that wasn't enough, after breakfast today, Matthias and I walked out to Little Downham, past hedgerows laden with sloes, rosehips and ripe blackberries, until we got to the community orchard, and filled his backpack with yet more apples and pears. The leaves are yellowing at the edges, and the air has that slightly crackly, woody autumnal scent, although it's still as warm as ever.

Last night, Matthias and I rewatched Casablanca, which I had last seen about twenty-five years ago. It really is that good, and I cried buckets, of course (although about the politics, more than the interpersonal stories). It's extraordinary to me that it was made not post-WWII, but in 1942 — an incredible act of hope and optimism, and faith in human effort turned collaboratively towards an existential struggle. It is of course incredibly emotionally manipulative, but sometimes I just want to see a bunch of traumatised exiles stand up to totalitarian bullies, you know?

This week I finished three books )

In the time since I started writing this post, the UK government sent me its (scheduled, warned-for) blaring, vibrating phone test emergency alert, and the sky outside has turned from burning blue to cloud-covered grey. The weekend is winding down, and gathering itself in, like a blanket thrown over tired legs.
