2015/2016

A little late because of the holiday mess, but here it is! My annual tradition of filling out an old and way out-of-date end-of-year survey circa 2004.

1. What did you do in 2015 that you'd never done before?
Went to Okinawa! Turned 30. Went to a stadium concert in Japan.

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Last year I guess I said I just wanted to take care of myself, physically. It’s debatable how well I did that.

For 2016, it is to study for and take the N1 level of the JLPT. I don’t need to necessarily PASS to feel that this resolution is accomplished, just study earnestly and do my best. Related to Japanese, I'd like to read a bit more, and also find a way to consistently practice translation that works for me.

I'd also like to concern myself less with keeping up with the news/communities/commentary surrounding my interests, and just spend less time on the web looking at hobby-related stuff in general.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not this year, as far as I know.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, thank goodness.

5. What countries did you visit?
The US, as part one of my YOU ONLY TURN 30 ONCE festivities. It was a great trip.

6. What would you like to have in 2016 that you lacked in 2015?
I dunno, a cat?

7. What date from 2015 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
There are a number of events I could pull from, but I think the days I was in Okinawa (Nov 14-16) will stand out the most, because after spending almost half my life dreaming of going there I finally did it!

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
GOING TO OKINAWA, perhaps more broadly pushing myself to get out there and enjoy life a bit more in the latter half of the year.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Starting and dropping learning Spanish on Duolingo and progamming and HTML stuff on Coursera. Playing too many 80+ hour RPGs.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Yeah, I had some stuff. Luckily nothing too serious, but def not fun.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
PLANE TICKETS

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Anyone and everyone who dealt with me when I was cranky.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
People who always have to be outraged about something on the internet.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Bills, food, everything related to my YOU ONLY TURN 30 ONCE festivities, books and games.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Xenoblade, Legend of Heroes, Disneyland, Okinawa

16. What song will always remind you of 2015?
1. Sakanaction - Shin Takarajima

2. This summer was The Summer of Carlos Toshiki & Omega Tribe. Any number of tracks will do, but apparently Toki wa Kagerou was my number one on iTunes.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? I wanna say a tad bit happier (post-30th, anyway. Turns out 30 is better than 29)
ii. thinner or fatter? Same-ish
iii. richer or poorer? No change.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Studying.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Watching people be outraged and/or watching people screaming at each other on the internet (usually over things that aren’t even important)

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Got up at 5am to meet my family at the airport. Got them settled in, let them nap, then we went out for Okinawan food for dinner. Not a bad Christmas, but it didn't really feel like Christmas at ALL.

21. How will you be spending New Year’s Eve?
My family came over, we had soba, played Mario Kart, watched some TV. My family went to bed by 10. Katsushi and I were up till midnight, but we were playing games quietly in bed and about 10 minutes after midnight kinda were like "Oh yeah, Happy New Year?"

22. Did you fall in love in 2015?
Still in the same relationship, so I guess things are okay. Talking not seriously I totally fell in love with Carlos Toshiki and RE-fell in love with the lead singer of Sakanaction

23. How many one-night stands
0.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
If 2014 was the year I fell in love with Japanese TV, 2015 was the year I fell out of love. I still watch one show regularly, though, and that is Matsuko no Shiranai Sekai. Because Matsuko Deluxe is the best, and I love that the show brings in people to introduce topics who are NOT TV people and are often awkward.

Also started watching Steven Universe and LOVED it. And Kimmy Schmidt!

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Haha no.

26. What was the best book you read?
I read more than I let on this year, but what was the best? I dunno. Martian Chronicles? When Marnie was There? The Long Earth? That book on the history of Disneyland?

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
CARLOS TOSHIKIIIIIIII

28. What did you want and get?
Having turning 30 be awesome instead of terrible.

29.What did you want and not get?
A cat?

30. What was your favorite film that you saw for the first time this year?
Inside Out, The Force Awakens.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Had a picnic in the park and went out to eat afterwards. The next day I took my friends to Nara. As mentioned multiple times before this, I turned 30 this year.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A cat?

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2015?
EXPRESS OUTLET SUMMER 2015

34. What kept you sane?
Nothing.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Um, Carlos Toshiki, even though he hasn’t been relevant since the early 90s. Also the Sakanaction guy.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Gun violence, election stuff, etc.

37. Who did you miss?
Same mix of people and cats as usual.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I guess Natsuki, the guy that took me to Awajishima to see my friend from my hometown.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2015.
SHUT UP AND ENJOY LIFE…? Also, that while appreciating the past and it's various styles/trends/movements/media/aesthetics is good, yearning unrealistically for the past and generally being a slave to nostalgia is most definitely not. We can't face the future if we are too caught up in the past.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
TOKI WA KAGEROUUUUU

In other news, getting back into the swing of things post-holidays. Currently: Pulling through work. Enjoying eating at home. Playing Sen no Kiseki on the Vita. Reading The Left Hand of Darkness. Feeling an epic Adventures of Pete and Pete rewatch brewing.

In one week from now I will be at Tokyo Disneyland. We got our tickets in the mail the other day and the hype is REAL.
